Fire Islands: Chapter One: The Storm

Just a little word here before I start chapter one. You may notice that my chapters increase in length as I go on. That's not intentional, that just happens sometimes when I start a story. Okay? Good. Glad you understand. One more thing, this contains spoilers for many of the books. I recommend finishing book thirteen before reading this.

Chapter One

The Storm

The former dragonets of destiny circled in the air above the sparkling sea. The wind blew in their faces and each one of them knew that the others were as happy as themselves to be on break. "We've been teaching at the Jade Mountain Academy for forever!" complained Tsunami. "It's been one disaster after another!"

"No it hasn't," protested Starflight. "Besides the minor drawbacks of Sora trying to kill Icicle, Icicle trying to kill everyone, Darkstalker rising and trying to kill the entire IceWing population, Queen Wasp trying to kill the LeafWings, the Lost Continent being put into mortal danger..." He trailed off with a frown.

"Let's just say it has been an eventful year," Glory said as she brushed Starflight's wing with her own to guide him into an updraft.

Tsunami snorted. "Eventful? Oh, that's only the understatement of the century."

Clay sighed and circled back to look at her. "Let's just all be glad that we're on break and alive. That was a lot of killing put into Starflight's trying-to-make-it-seem-fine speech."

"Yep." Sunny narrowed her eyes against the sun as she scanned the shore. "We seem to be getting closer to the IceWing kingdom. Any thoughts?"

"Other than 'We should get out of here before Queen Snowfall tries to kill us?' Not really," replied Tsunami.

Glory murmured an agreement and led the way back to the mountains. Just then Clay pulled up short. "Is it just me, or is it a lot more humid all of a sudden?" They all turned towards the horizon. Dark clouds were beginning to pile up at an alarming rate.

"Quick!" cried Sunny frantically. "We have to get to the mountains!" They all turned and fled, beating their wings as fast as they could. But it was no use. Starflight yelped in surprise as the wind swept him up and carried him over where he thought must be the direction of the ocean. He heard screams and yells of shock and surprise as the rest of them were carried in the opposite direction of where they wanted to go.

"Everyone stay together!" called Tsunami over the roar of the wind. "If we don't, it might blow half of us into the rainforest and half to Pantala!"

Clay tried to shout an agreement but his words were lost in the wind. He frantically scanned the wind and rain, looking for his friends. Starflight was in the most danger. He couldn't see where he was going or if something was coming towards him. "Starflight!" he called, but no answer came back. "Anyone?" His cry went unanswered as dark spots began to swim in his vision. Just then he saw golden scales, and twisted in midair to see Sunny being tossed around in the storm. With his last bit of remaining consciousness, he pushed off of a flying piece of debris and fell into her, wrapping his wings around her wet body, before the darkness covered him completely.
